The Bat Conservation Trust guidelines (Collins, 2016) require one dusk emergence survey or one dawn re-entry survey of structures with a low potential for supporting bats; one dusk emergence survey and one dawn re-entry survey of structures with a moderate potential for supporting bats. For structures with high potential to support bats (or where roosts are present) three surveys are required (of which one must be a dawn re-entry survey). The guidelines state that for structures with moderate potential one of the two surveys must be completed in the peak bat activity season between mid-May and the end of August. For structures with high potential two of the three surveys should be within this period.
We will at all times recommend the most efficient and pragmatic course of action to allow the proposed works to proceed, which may include (following approval from the client) consultation with the relevant local planning authority in order to determine the minimum level of further surveys acceptable.
